The Division of Administrative Law (DAL) conducts hearings involving the Department of Public Safety (DPS). One of the largest areas of law for DAL, we handle about 7000 cases per year under the Louisiana Tests for Suspected Drunken Drivers law, by which drivers who have been arrested for driving while intoxicated suffer license suspension as a consequence of that arrest. When DPS proposes to suspend a driver’s license, the driver can ask for an appeal of that decision. Instructions for filing an appeal are on the documents given to the driver at the time of arrest, and the request for appeal must be filed with the Department of Public Safety, Driver Management Division, P.O. Box 64886, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70896-4886.
